Welding is a versatile skill that allows you to create your own decorative and functional pieces like tables, shelves, garden art and more. In this 30-hour class, you will learn the processes of MIG, TIG and Stick welding, gain an understanding of general welding safety procedures and how to cut and grind metal for simple projects. All equipment and safety gear are provided. Students must wear long sleeves, non-flammable fabrics, long pants and boots. This class is great for beginners or novice welders interested in improving their skillset.   

Build on the foundational skills learned in Level 1 as you gain more confidence and control with MIG, TIG and Stick welding techniques. In this 30-hour class, you'll continue to develop safe welding habits while working on slightly more advanced projects that introduce new challenges in cutting, grinding and assembling metal. Explore design basics and begin to incorporate your own ideas into functional or decorative pieces. All equipment and safety gear are provided. You'll learn forge safety, proper tool technique, and fundamental terms while mastering essential skills including tapering, bending, drawing out, twisting, and rivet setting. Each week builds on the last as you create functional projects: an S Hook, a twisted bottle opener, a Russian Rose, three J Hooks for a coat rack, and your own set of tongs through rivet setting. The course culminates in a final project of your choice, allowing you to apply all the skills you've learned. No prior experience necessary—leave with confidence at the forge and a collection of handcrafted pieces that honor this traditional mountain craft.

From the start, you’ll learn how to safely set up your machine, properly use essential PPE (provided if you don’t have your own) and operate a wire-feed welding gun with confidence. The bulk of the class is hands-on: you’ll practice fundamental welding techniques, learn to troubleshoot common issues, and create a themed steep project that you’ll proudly take home at the end of the day. We’ll also walk through the basics of selecting your own welding equipment so you leave not just with a finished project but also the knowledge and confidence to continue welding at home.

Now that you’ve learned the basics, this 2-part intermediate class will cover several new topics to expand your knowledge base as you create a larger project than in the beginner’s class. Learn to design a pattern, prepare your templates from that pattern, use Stained Glass Patina to “color” your solder joints after the project is soldered, and different methods to frame your piece. There will be plenty of time for general questions. Tools and supplies are provided, with discounted starter kits and tools available for purchase. Discuss the types of tools and wire needed as you learn fundamental wire wrapping techniques used in making jewelry. Practice making simple and wrapped loops and connecting wrapped components together during the class as you work on creating a bracelet and set of earrings. All tools and supplies, including a selection of beads will be provided.   

$20 materials fee

We supply everything you will need to create your project, and there will be numerous design patterns to choose from, and a selection of colored glass will be provided. We will teach you how to “cut” glass, apply the copper foil, and solder your piece together. By the end of the class you will have your very own creation completed and ready to take home, and you may have even found a new hobby.

Once the glass is in a molten state, it is shaped with special tools. Learn about the materials needed and how to safely use a torch as you practice making two different types of round glass beads with frit (crushed glass). Finished beads will be kept by the instructor overnight to be annealed in a kiln for hardness and durability. You will be able to pick up your beads on campus a few days following the class.
